Ben Dunwell’s TEDXxDaltVila Talk: Inspiring Hope with Ancient History Insights

Meet Ben Dunwell, a versatile creative who transitioned

from being a librettist in collaboration with composer Will Todd to finding a new home and purpose on Ibiza. Originally hailing from Great Britain, Ben's artistic evolution led him to become an author, capturing the essence of Ibiza's culture in his novel 'Pine Tree Island'.

In his last year's TED Talk, Ben shared a simple yet profound insight — that exploring the roots of ancient history can be a source of hope. Through his talk, he not only unveiled the cultural gems of Ibiza but also connected the dots between the past and the present.

With Ben's expertise gained as a speaker at TEDx last year, he is currently coaching speakers for this year's event, focusing on enhancing their storytelling skills and stage performance.

TEDxDaltVila: How has being a librettist influenced your novel's storytelling?

I’ve found them very different disciplines. Choral and Operatic libretti tend to be quite short and intense, whereas a novel has more journey. Clarity is everything in the theatre, and I try to keep to that principle in the books as well.

TEDxDaltVila: Given your TEDx experience, what unique perspectives does storytelling offer in a stage performance?

Connecting to an audience can happen in many ways. Sometimes it’s narrative, often it’s a sense of something shared. Just being in the same space together, speaker and listener, begins its own story no matter what comes next.

TEDxDaltVila: How has your experience as a speaker at a TEDx conference impacted your journey as a novelist, and has it influenced your connections within the Ibiza community?

It’s always nice to meet new people who were in the audience for last year’s Tedx, and find out about their worlds. Writing the talk itself, and putting a shape to my thoughts about how we relate to our ancestors, has given me a bit of a manifesto for what my books are trying to do. With the second in the series now complete, it’s good to have those guiding lights.
